Collecting golf balls is one of the most familiar tasks on a driving range.

For decades, range staff have driven ball pickers across practice areas, collecting thousands of golf balls before returning them for washing and redistribution. It remains an effective and widely used method of maintaining ball availability.

As autonomous technology becomes more common however, many operators are asking how automated collection differs from traditional approaches and whether it is suitable for their facility.

The answer depends less on the machine itself and more on how the driving range operates.

The Role of Manual Collection

Manual collection is a proven process.

Staff determine when balls need collecting, drive the picker across the range, return to the wash area and repeat the process as required throughout the day.

For facilities with lower ball volumes or predictable usage patterns, this approach can continue to perform reliably for many years.

The process is also familiar, requiring little operational change.

Where Automation Changes the Process

Autonomous collection follows the same objective but changes how the work is completed.

Rather than requiring an operator to drive the picker, the machine follows programmed routes independently, collecting balls before returning to a designated location when required.

The collection process itself remains largely unchanged. What changes is the amount of repetitive labour required to complete it.

Automation Is Only One Part of the Workflow

It is important to recognise that collecting balls represents only one stage of the range ball process.

Once collected, balls still need to be transferred, washed, transported and returned to the dispenser before they are available for golfers again.

For this reason, introducing autonomous collection does not automatically increase the overall efficiency of a driving range if another stage of the workflow remains the limiting factor.

Understanding where operational delays occur is often more valuable than simply increasing collection capacity.

 

Choosing the Right Approach

There is no universal solution.

Some facilities continue to achieve excellent results using manual collection supported by experienced staff. Others find that autonomous collection helps reduce repetitive labour while maintaining a more consistent operation throughout the day.

The appropriate choice depends on daily ball usage, staffing resources, operating schedules and the wider range ball workflow.
